STATE GOVERNMENT RESOURCES

Maryland Health Care Commission: is the state agency responsible for developing the Nursing Home Guide.

Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH): is the state agency responsible for overseeing and administering medical programs, including the Medicaid program for low-income residents. The DHMH web page includes information about long-term care. DHMH is also responsible for the licensing and regulatory oversight of Maryland nursing homes through the Office of Health Care Quality.

Maryland Department of Aging: is the state agency that oversees programs and services for Maryland's older residents. The Maryland Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program helps residents in long-term care facilities maintain their legal rights, control over their own lives, and personal dignity. Another service provided by the Department is Senior Information and Assistance, a statewide program that provides information on the services and benefits available for older persons. Staff in local offices throughout the state will help determine what services are needed and where they can be found.

Maryland Attorney General's Office: publishes the report "Nursing Homes: What You Need To Know," which provides information for people considering nursing home care as well as for current residents of nursing facilities. The report features information to assist consumers with evaluating nursing homes and alternatives, what to check for in a nursing home contract, and how to complain when quality care is lacking.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RESOURCES

Nursing Home Compare: Provides an interactive tool that allows Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers to access comparison information about nursing homes. It contains information on every Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing home in the country, including over 17,000 nationwide.

Nursing Home Checklist: Provides a detailed checklist for rating different nursing homes visited based upon, Quality of Life, Quality of Care, Nutrition and Hydration, and Safety. The checklist also elaborates on how to use the information discovered through Nursing Home Compare when visiting nursing homes.

Alternatives to Nursing Home Care: Describes the Medicare covered programs that are available to those in need of Nursing Home Care, but who would rather live in the comfort of their own home.

Nursing Home Resident Rights: Lists the rights, by law, that are given to all nursing home patients.
